A dog licking the ball on the Calming Bowl

How licking works to calm your dog

When dogs lick they release endorphins, the “happy” hormone that lowers stress. It’s the same hormone released by us when running, walking or meditating. And just like us, dogs need around 20 to 30 minutes of licking to reach this calming state.

The problem with a lick mat is that he finishes it in around 5 minutes and to get him to the 30 minute mark you’d have to refill it six times. That’s what the calming bowl fixes, you give close to the same amount of food you’d put on a lick mat but the ball only brings a bit of it to the top at a time. He has to keep working for the rest so one fill lasts him at least 30 minutes.

What happens after his licking session

After he finally reaches his calming state, he’s completely settled. Either he’ll take a good nap or continue his doggo life while having no interest in “bad behaviors” (that actually are high stress behaviors). That’s why being in a low stress state will help reduce those unwanted behaviors. The calming bowl is the easiest way to help your dog cope with stressful events

We’ve added a regular bowl and a slow feeder too

Because you don’t need a kitchen full of different bowls

The bowl taken apart: the slow-feeder insert on top, the main body with its lick surface, and the rolling ball in its own cup underneath
Slow lickerSlow feederRegular bowl

The slow licking part is there to calm your dog. The slow feeder is there to help his digestion and a regular bowl so you’re not stuck with a full set of different bowls in your kitchen.

How it works

Three steps to calm your dog.

Spooning peanut butter into the grooves of the Calming Bowl
01

Fill it up

It takes about thirty seconds to fill. Put some yoghurt, peanut butter, bone broth or anything soft he can lick.

02

Let him lick

Hand it to him and he’ll get to work, if it’s his first time put some food on top of the ball for him to lick and understand the movement.

03

Rinse it off

It’s easy to rinse and wash, no holes or weird shapes that traps food.

The honest comparison

Why licking beats the rest.

A flat lick mat
The Calming Bowl
A flat lick mat
This bowl
He licks it clean in five minutes and then he walks off.
The ball keeps pushing food back up so he licks for a full thirty minutes.
It slides across the floor or he flips it right over.
Suction cups grip the floor so it stays where you put it.
A thin smear on flat rubber is gone fast.
Deep grooves and a ball to push mean he licks slower and gets calmer.
It does one job and that is it.
You also get a plain bowl and a free slow feeder in the box.

It is the only thing that reliably ends a zoomie session. Everything else just winds her up more.

The groomer says he is fine once he is there. It is the twenty minutes before that were the problem. Not anymore.

She shakes head to toe from the car park to the exam room. I take this to appointments now and she licks through the whole waiting room part. The vet tech asked what it was and wrote the name down.

Bought it after I started pricing daycare I cannot afford. Much cheaper option and it worked.

He hears thunder about ten minutes before I do and that is when the shaking starts. This does not stop the storm but it gives him something to do about it, which turns out to be most of the battle.

The couple below us have a newborn and I was running out of ways to apologise. This has taken the edge off enough that I am not embarrassed anymore.

Keep the filling soft. That is the only trick to it. Anything stiff and the ball stops pulling it up and your dog gets bored.

No idea why this beats the forty pound puzzle toy sat in the cupboard but it does.

I got one of those passive aggressive notes about the barking, which is how you know it has got bad. I knocked last week to check and they said they have not heard him in weeks.

Wet food works better than peanut butter for us and it is a lot cheaper per fill.

I was late to work most days because I could not make myself walk out the door. Sounds pathetic written down. This has genuinely fixed my mornings.

Thirty minutes of quiet, every single time.

FAQs

The repetitive motion of licking releases calming endorphins and triggers the rest-and-digest response, which lowers cortisol and slows the heart rate. It's a dog's natural way to self-soothe, the same reason a stressed dog licks the sofa or his paws. This bowl gives that instinct a job: he nudges the rolling ball and works his tongue across the lotus lick mat to reach every last bit.
